Erich Paulsen
Mr. Paulsen was born in 1932 in Treuenbrietzen, Kreis Juterbog. He moved with his parents to West Germany after the war. Erich showed a prodigious talent for paintings as he was growing up, but his father urged him to train in a normal profession as a varnisher and whitewasher. His foreman painted landscapes in his leisure where the young Paulsen watched. Paulsen eagerly wanted to try painting, but he had no money to buy brushes or paint. His drive took him to steal some of the foreman’s paints, but the brushes were not as easily accessible. The only tool available for him to use was an old scraper spatula; thus he used this technique to apply bold colors. The foreman did not scold Paulsen for the theft for when he saw the painting; he knew he was destined for painting. After this discovery, Paulsen went to the Meisterschulde der Maleri in Hamburg; where he studied the great artists with resolve.
Mr. Paulsen’s main love is that or capturing landscapes on canvas. He enjoys painting the area around him as well as the Northern German coastline areas.
Paulsen’s paintings are well recognized not only by his strong sense of color, but also his very personalized palette knife technique. This combination gives the subjects of paintings such appeal that people are drawn to his paintings, and feel part of his landscapes. Paulsen prefers to paint landscapes and in particular subjects around his home in Lower Saxony. Paulsen’s unique palette knife technique and his wonderful colors give his paintings a particular flair and make them stand out.
He has great appreciation for the beauty of the rivers and sometimes will have the Ems, Weser and Elbe rivers in his landscapes.
As an art student, Paulsen traveled to Italy, France, Spain, Scotland, and Norway to expand his knowledge of paintings and to experience the feeling of the landscapes of other countries as well as Germany.
Paulsen has had exhibits for his work throughout Germany and has also been successfully received internationally in the USA, Stockholm, Sweden, Oslo, and Norway. His paintings are on permanent exhibition with the Arnot Gallery in New York, NY.
